Five Under Appreciated DS Games From 2006

magnetica_boxart.jpgFinally, a end-of-year list that doesn't extoll the virtues of Gears of War or Wii Sports. The crew at Cheap Ass Gamer are doing DS owners the service of schooling you on the games that weren't New Super Mario Bros. or Brain Age that were still tons of fun in '06.

That means games like Magnetica and Lost Magic and Contact, titles that didn't burn up the sales charts amid the sea of stellar releases last year, finally make a "best of" list. And, in the Cheap Ass tradition, info on the best deals for each underdog accompanies the write up.

This is one list to hold on to, even for those of us with gaming backlogs, as it will come in handy during the summer gaming doldrums. Michael McWhertor

OK, so not on this exact guitar - it's SPOnG's, get your own.
The rock and rollocking success of Red Octane's Guitar Hero game
seems to have inspired the guys at Plato studio over in Japan to try to
recreate the rock and roll experience for Nintendo's handheld.

Plato, the team behind the hugely successful English language teaching
software for DS, is developing the handheld guitar game, called Hiite
Utaeru DS Guitar M-06.

According to reports on 1UP, "The game allows anyone to strum out a
few pleasant sounds, while proper guitar players can also feel at home
with the ability to control the sound like a real guitar. 120 chords
are built in, with three plucking variations of each. These are
navigated with the d-pad, while the pen is brushed across the touch
screen to strum."

Plato claims to have demonstrated the game to professional guitarists
who have reacted favourably, particularly liking the fact that the DS
guitar-simulator could be carried around in a pocket.

Hiite Utaeru DS Guitar M-06 goes on sale in Japan at the end of
December.

SPOnG will be looking to get more information on this intriguing little
title, along with details of any plans for a US/European release in
2007.

Five reasons to own a PSP

Sure -- the Nintendo DS is leagues better than the PSP. But what about us poor schmucks who bought one at launch? Turns out there's lots of reasons why we should be happy we sold our kidneys to buy a PSP, and the best might actually be yet to come.

Year in Review: August

August was an interesting month, especially for PSP news:
$149 PSP coming soon? CNN reports
Then: "The analyst expects that Sony will drop the price of the PSP to a mere $149, $50 less than what it is right now."
Now: While this would be a smart decision, Sony's still not budging from the $199 mark.

Fun = DS, not PSP, says EA exec
Then: "There's no doubt that EA has historically bet more on PSP. I think we were excited by the technology, but the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun. We must never forget that what we need to focus on is fun and so EA is putting more effort behind DS games."
Now: EA may start supporting Nintendo more in the future, but with titles like Burnout coming in the future, it doesn't seem like Sony fans have to worry.

PSP on Snakes on a Plane
Now: The PSP was prominently featured in the film, which failed to make the impact that the blogosphere had predicted.

Rumor: PSP redesign coming before March 07
Then: "Well, a very believable scan of PlayStation Magazine seem to suggest that Sony's working hard on one, and it's coming very soon: March 2007, two years after the US release of the handheld."

Now: If a redesign is coming in three months, we'd know about it by now, wouldn't we? Or will Sony do a surprise launch? Keep an eye on this one.

New questionable PSP rumors surface
Now: It's interesting to note that all of the rumors came true, including the most specific one about the PSP Entertainment Pack. Guess some rumors are spot-on, huh?

DevHook reeled in by Sony?
Then: "The web host of DevHook has received a cease and desist order."
Now: The homebrew scene is stronger than ever. Many sites are careful about the kinds of files they host, although its not uncommon to find other sites providing some very questionable content.

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl to arrive Stateside next April

pokemon.jpgAfter the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl editions have ravaged wallets all across Japan, this marketing phenomenon will now make its way across the Pacific to the U.S., riding on sales figures that are about to breach the 4,000,000 mark. Of course, the Pokémon tsunami will not arrive until April 22nd next year, but this news is more than enough to get gamers into a frenzy as Diamond and Pearl will be the first proper Pokémon title for the Nintendo DS platform. Looks like the strange fetish of catching ‘em all has not abated - in fact, it seems as though the fever has spread all the more as long as the game developers keep on munching on magic mushrooms and designing new Pokémon to keep up with the demand.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl will feature both old game mechanics that made it a huge hit back in 1996 as well as new gameplay that will definitely enthrall beginners and seasoned veterans alike. The game will take place in a new region called Sinnoh, and as usual, you can start off as a double X chromosomed human or one of the XY variety who is raring to embark on the path of becoming the next Pokémon League Champion. Pokémon from Pokémon Diamond Pearl on the GBA can be transferred over via the GBA game slot, adding a totally new dimension to gameplay.

New Pokémon includes Munchlax and Weavile, while the availability of local wireless play enables up to eight other trainers get together for some time of quality fun. With a rating of E for Everyone, you can expect Pokémon fever to sweep across U.S. when April 2007 rolls around. I remembered my college days where I had plenty of fun trying to catch them all, and getting good ol’ Magicarp to gain enough experience to reach level 20 was a hoot. This will definitely be one of the hottest DS titles next year.

Homebrew Nintendo DS Tilt Sensor

This homebrew Nintendo DS tilt sensor makes use of the mini-USB port and allows you to digitally control the system (left/right). Here’s what Adam Frucci of SciFi has to say:

Suffice to say, I won’t be modding my DS Lite to have a tilt-sensor like these inventive chaps. Plugging into the mini-USB port on the back, this homemade sensor doesn’t work the way you would want. It’s digital, so you get two directions: left and right

Loco Roco Sequel Confirmed

Loco Roco, the unorthodox rolling blob game for PSP, is getting a sequel. Sony Computer Entertainment President Phil Harrison recently spoke to MTV News, and that is where he dropped the bomb. "It was a very successful game for us and we're continuing to evolve the franchise," he said. "We're going to bring 'LocoRoco' back in a couple of new ways with some new friends in the future."
