Pokémon Diamond, Pearl to arrive Stateside next April

pokemon.jpgAfter the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl editions have ravaged wallets all across Japan, this marketing phenomenon will now make its way across the Pacific to the U.S., riding on sales figures that are about to breach the 4,000,000 mark. Of course, the Pokémon tsunami will not arrive until April 22nd next year, but this news is more than enough to get gamers into a frenzy as Diamond and Pearl will be the first proper Pokémon title for the Nintendo DS platform. Looks like the strange fetish of catching ‘em all has not abated - in fact, it seems as though the fever has spread all the more as long as the game developers keep on munching on magic mushrooms and designing new Pokémon to keep up with the demand.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl will feature both old game mechanics that made it a huge hit back in 1996 as well as new gameplay that will definitely enthrall beginners and seasoned veterans alike. The game will take place in a new region called Sinnoh, and as usual, you can start off as a double X chromosomed human or one of the XY variety who is raring to embark on the path of becoming the next Pokémon League Champion. Pokémon from Pokémon Diamond Pearl on the GBA can be transferred over via the GBA game slot, adding a totally new dimension to gameplay.

New Pokémon includes Munchlax and Weavile, while the availability of local wireless play enables up to eight other trainers get together for some time of quality fun. With a rating of E for Everyone, you can expect Pokémon fever to sweep across U.S. when April 2007 rolls around. I remembered my college days where I had plenty of fun trying to catch them all, and getting good ol’ Magicarp to gain enough experience to reach level 20 was a hoot. This will definitely be one of the hottest DS titles next year.

Homebrew Nintendo DS Tilt Sensor

This homebrew Nintendo DS tilt sensor makes use of the mini-USB port and allows you to digitally control the system (left/right). Here’s what Adam Frucci of SciFi has to say:

Suffice to say, I won’t be modding my DS Lite to have a tilt-sensor like these inventive chaps. Plugging into the mini-USB port on the back, this homemade sensor doesn’t work the way you would want. It’s digital, so you get two directions: left and right

Loco Roco Sequel Confirmed

Loco Roco, the unorthodox rolling blob game for PSP, is getting a sequel. Sony Computer Entertainment President Phil Harrison recently spoke to MTV News, and that is where he dropped the bomb. "It was a very successful game for us and we're continuing to evolve the franchise," he said. "We're going to bring 'LocoRoco' back in a couple of new ways with some new friends in the future."

Here are the links to upgrade your PSP. There currently isn't a hack for the 2.7 PSPs so you're going to have to sacrifice your homebrew if you upgrade (atleast for a little while).

Micro Machines V4

Micro Machines V4, which we reviewed earlier this year on the PSP, has just shipped for American Nintendo DSs (European release to follow next month). While no online reviews are currently available, it scored an 84% according to Official Nintendo Magazine UK, a bit higher than the PSP version averaged.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Pre-Order Bonus

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Castlevania franchise, Konami offered a bonus to those who pre-ordered Portrait of Ruin, the second DS installment of the now 20 year old series.
Included in the cardboard box (which comes complete with a faux wax seal) are a soundtrack CD that spans most of the core Castlevania games as well as some of the now more obscure Game Boy titles. Castlevania has always been noted for its excellent compositions, and it's a treat to be able to hear some of these songs as they were originally played in their respective games. Interestingly enough, some of the tracks are labeled as coming from an incorrect game. Bloody Tears, for example, is listed as being a cut from the original NES game, when it is actually from Simon's Quest.

Also included is an art book featuring cover and character art for again, most of more popular games in the series. A combination Portrait of Ruin poster / Castlevania timeline rounds out the printed bonuses, though this is also interesting for its inclusion of games that are generally considered non-canon. Lastly, the package also includes a Castlevania branded, extending DS stylus and a double DS pak carrying case.

All in all, this is one of the better pre-order bonuses out there and is a must-have for long time Castlevania fans. While it's likely too late to get through online stores, plenty of them have cropped up on eBay.

When porn stars and pool collide

Oh no. It's yet another one of those NSFW PSP games. You know what I'm talking about: games that seem to offer no benefit other than displaying gratuitous amounts of T&A. Considering the older demographic of the PSP, and the relative privacy one has while using it, it's unsurprising that publishers are trying to take advantage with more "adult" skewed games. Pocket Pool rewards players with photos and videos of a questionable nature for playing a round of billiards. However, is taunting realistic "ball control" a good thing in a game like this?

Apple might make foray into gaming

Apple might make foray into gaming
from Game Addicts by Edwin
When both the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS were released a couple of years ago, most people thought that the former would trample all over the latter since the PSP boasts vastly superior hardware, amazing graphics, and various multimedia capabilities whereas the dual screened DS could just…well, play games. Things have turned out totally different with the DS trouncing the PSP in terms of hardware sales and even more when it comes to software. Since then, Sony has distanced itself from the DS, ensuring that potential customers see the PSP as an all rounder portable media player that plays games. Unfortunately, the iPod is also another portable media player that comes with some simple games, and word on the street is Apple might want to make an attempt at the mobile gaming market which has seen all competitors swept aside by Nintendo ever since the first Game Boy was released in 1989.

Since the iPod has successfully usurped Sony’s position in the world of portable music players, Apple thinks it will have an equally good chance at causing a stir in the mobile gaming market as well. Since video games are already readily available for the iPod via the iTunes store, that possibility is not exactly a pipe dream as the infrastructure to take off on a huge scale is already in place.
I think Apple does have a few issues to contend against before they can truly make a mark in the gaming scene. Firstly, the current iPod’s display is just way to small to carry out any serious gaming decently, and using the Click Wheel as a control scheme will just not do. Maybe this will change with the release of the rumored widescreen video iPod, but that still doesn’t answer the question regarding controls. Would a new Apple iPod with more serious gaming capabilities be a threat to Sony’s floundering PSP?

Nintendo DS Lite adds MP3 playback

Nintendo DS Lite adds MP3 playback
Playing catchup with Sony's PSP
Matt Chapman, vnunet.com 17 Nov 2006

Nintendo has finally added an MP3 player to its handheld DS Lite console, although the software update will cost UK users £20.
This is in stark contrast to Sony's rival PlayStation Portable (PSP) system, which includes MP3 playback as standard.
The Nintendo system also falls down against the PSP when it comes to adding files to the console.
MP3 files are added to an SD card using a PC, but users will need to purchase a card reader and SD memory card separately.
The PSP connects to a computer using USB and, although users still need to buy an memory card, files can be dropped straight on to the console.
Nintendo's UK press relations firm refused to comment on the pricing, maintaining that this was the only information they had received from the US.
The Nintendo MP3 Player software will be available across Europe on 8 December. As well as playing MP3s on the DS Lite, it also works with the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro.

Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the DS sold 113,097 units from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5. By comparison Sony Corp.'s PSP handheld sold 23,725 units and the Playstation 2 sold 20,982 units in the same period.
DS titles like a new Kirby offering, General Knowledge Training dominated the software charts with sales of over 159,000 units each.
